Troubleshooting Hoverboard

 How to Calibrate Hoverboard

Hoverboards, also known as "smart balance wheel" need to be calibrated from time to time so it's important that you learn how to calibrate a hoverboard. This guide to calibrating a self balancing scooter will cover how to do this as well as the many other issues that might arise during calibration.

How to Calibrate a Hoverboard

To calibrate a hoverboard is a relatively simple process. We have made a video for you to make it even easier, so follow along and you'll know how to calibrate your hoverboard in no time.

Instructions

  1. Put the hoverboard on a flat surface, making sure that it is level. Whatever level you set it at, is the level that you'll it will be calibrated for.
  2. Make sure the hoverboard is completely off. This means that it needs to be shut off by the silver power button, not put into sleep mode by the remote.
  3. Once the hoverboard is level, press and hold the silver power button for 5 seconds until you hear a beep.
  4. The front / top (depends on model) and indicator LED lights will flash. Let the hoverboard sit like this for 30 seconds.
  5. After 30 seconds has passed, press the silver power button once again and shut the hoverboard off.
  6. Your hoverboard should now be calibrated and should ride level with the ground. If not, go to step 7.
  7. If your hoverboard still won't balance, we recommend you buy a replacement circuit board.

How to Calibrate Bluetooth Hoverboard

Bluetooth hoverboards are calibrated the same way as a non-bluetooth hoverboard. The difference however, is that calibrating a bluetooth hoverboard has more risk associated with it. The risk you run when calibrating a bluetooth hoverboard is that you might fry the bluetooth chip. This may happen whether you perform the hoverboard calibration properly or not.

How to Calibrate Hoverboard With Remote

How to Calibrate Hoverboard with Remote

Remotes, believe it or not, are actually the cause of a lot of the problems associated with hoverboards. Hoverboard owners tend to be kids in the age range of 9 to 14 and well, they forget (or may not even know) to shut the hoverboard off using the silver on-board button, using the remote instead.

We like to compare the remote on a hoverboard to the "Sleep" feature on your computer. You're not actually shutting the computer down, you're just putting it into low-power mode and "waking it up" when you turn the hoverboard on again.

Because of this, people will leave the hoverboard on "Sleep Mode" overnight, or even for many days at a time, causing the need to learn how to calibrate hoverboard with remote.

As far as performing the hoverboard calibration with the actual remote itself, it isn't possible to do. You will need to recalibrate the hoverboard using the silver on-board button as described in our tutorial above.

TroubleShooting - Hoverboard Won't Calibrate

If your hoverboard won't calibrate, then you'll want to run a series of troubleshooting exercise to find out why the hoverboard calibration is not working.

The first suggestion we have to see why your hoverboard won't calibrate is to check and see if a hoverboard LED light is stuck on. In all of these cases, you'll need to replace your hoverboard's gyroscope.

6.5" Hoverboard

On a 6.5" hoverboard, the LED light that is in the front might be stuck on. If this is the case, then you need to replace the hoverboard gyroscope on the side with the hoverboard LED light stuck on.

8" Lambo Hoverboard

On the 8" Lambo hoverboard, the LED lights are generally only on top of the wheels. These are RBG (multiple colors). When one side of the Lambo hoverboard is stuck on these lights will most likely be flashing, but one side of the hoverboard will not balance. The side with the lights stuck on that won't balance is the side that you'll need to replace the gyroscope on.

10" Hoverboard

When a 10" hoverboard LED light is stuck on, both LED's on the front and the back will be lit up, but only on one side. When this happens, calibrating a 10" hoverboard will not fix the problem. You will need to replace the hoverboard gyroscope on the side with the LED lights that are stuck on.
